Gastronomy Season "Fish on the Hook" (June each year)
The Llançà Department of Tourism and the town's restaurateurs have decided to boost the variety of good food on offer by re-launching a gastronomy promotional season which was first held in the early 1980's.
The product on offer is fish caught with the palangre, a type of multiple fishing-line, the use of which is a highly traditional method of fishing that is native to Llançà. It consists of using various fishing-lines with their hooks at the same time. Originally the palangres consisted of four lines made out of hemp and each about 40cm. long, from which hung pieces of line that were thinner at the end to which the hook was attached. The different lines were carried in rope baskets with the hooks attached to the sides.
Nowadays the baskets are made out of plastic, and the fishing-lines out of synthetic fibre. The bait used can be boiled octopus, squid, sea-cucumber, mussels or scallops, and the fish caugh are mainly hake or bream. It should be noted that the restaurants taking part in the promotion offer their own special menus, which have as common denominator that they all include fish caught with the palangre.
